Acer unveils world’s first curved-screen laptop

NEW DELH: Acer unveils world’s first curved-screen laptop. It has dual-GTX 1080 graphics and a numpad that flips over into a touchpad, too.

Acer has unveiled some new laptops at IFA in Germany, including the utterly monstrous curved-display 21-inch Predator 21X. Acer says it’s the world’s first laptop with a curved screen.

The new Predator 21X laptop sits at the very top of Acer’s gaming laptop range. The curved screen, which has a resolution of 2560×1080, is powered by two of Nvidia’s latest mobile GTX 1080 graphics cards. The screen is G-Sync enabled, too.

CPU-wise, the laptop has a new 7th-gen Kaby Lake Intel Core processor, but we don’t know exactly which model. Given the laptop’s desktop-replacement aspirations we are probably looking at some kind of quad-core 45W TDP chip, rather than one of the dual-core low-power parts unveiled by Intel this week. Intel isn’t planning to release its quad-core Kaby Lake parts until the first quarter of 2017—which incidentally is when the Predator 21X is meant to go on sale.

The Predator 21X also has Tobii eye-tracking hardware, 4.2 audio (what’s the only thing better than one subwoofer?), and a full-size illuminated Cherry MX mechanical keyboard. The numpad (which isn’t mechanical) can apparently be flipped over to become a touchpad. Really, the whole thing is a bit of a beast. Update: Acer told Ars that the Predator 21X will weigh 8kg (17.6lbs)—just under half the weight of Elvis, the world’s heaviest domestic cat.

Acer hasn’t provided even a rough ballpark for pricing on the Predator 21X, but considering top-end Predator 17 laptops cost £2,000 or more, the Predator 21X could cost upwards of £3000 ($4000+).

Elsewhere at IFA 2016, Acer unveiled two other laptops: a rather fetching MacBookalike called the Swift, and a hybrid 360-degree-hinge laptop called the Spin. The top-end Swift 7, which has two USB Type-C ports, a 13.3-inch screen, a 7th-gen Core i5 chip, and a 256GB SSD, is the thinnest laptop in the world according to Acer (9.9mm).

Pricing starts at $1000/€1300 (~£1100) for the Swift 7, scaling down to $750/€750 for the Swift 5, $500/€500 for the Swift 3, and just $250/€350 for the low-end Swift 1 model (all of which are thicker, heavier, and slower than the Swift 7). Judging by the weird dollar/euro pricing, the European Swift 7 model might be higher-spec than in the US.

The Spin follows a fairly similar model lineup: there’s a Spin 7, 5, 3, and 1, with pricing ranging from $260/€300 up to $1200/€1300 (~£1100). The Spin 7 is pretty svelte at 10.9mm thick, and comes with a 7th-gen Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. The Spin 5, though thicker than the 7, can be specced out with up to 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It sounds like the Spin 5 will also have access to some kind of stylus attachment.

The first Spin and Swift laptops will go on sale in October, though some models won’t arrive until November and December. (agencies)

India to give 20-yr residency status to certain fgn investors

NEW DELHI:  Emulating Singapore-model, India will offer residency permits of up to 20 years to foreigners willing to invest a minimum threshold in the country, under a new policy aimed at attracting more overseas investments.

The Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a proposal to allow foreigners get 10 year residency permits if they invest Rs 10 crore over 18 months or Rs 25 crore over three years. The residency status can be extended by another 10 years.

Investors would also be allowed to buy one residential property and their spouses and children can work or study here. However, this scheme would not be available for Pakistani or Chinese citizen.

“A certain threshold if you invest in India, then the availability of visa, the availability of the right to purchase assets, the availability of employment for family members, there is a detailed policy that has been approved by the Cabinet today,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said after the meeting.

The scheme is expected to encourage foreign investment in India and facilitate Make in India Programme. Under the Scheme, suitable provisions will be incorporated in the Visa Manual to provide for the grant of PRS to foreign investors.

An official statement said permanent residency status will be granted for 10 years with multiple entry. This can be reviewed for another 10 years if the holder has not come to adverse notice.

The scheme will be applicable only to foreign investors fulfilling the prescribed eligibility conditions and his/her spouse and dependents.

“In order to avail this scheme, the foreign investor will have to invest a minimum of Rs 10 crore to be brought within 18 months or Rs 25 crore to be brought within 36 months. Further, the foreign investment should result in generating employment to at least 20 resident Indians every financial year,” the statement said.

PRS will serve as a multiple entry visa without any stay stipulation and PRS holders will be exempted from the registration requirements, it added.

PRS holders will be allowed to purchase one residential property for dwelling purpose. The spouse/dependents of the PRS holder will be allowed to take up employment in private sector (in relaxation to salary stipulations for Employment Visa) and undertake studies in India. (AGENCIES)

SC rejects review plea of Kashmiri separatist leader

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea of Ashiq Hussain Faktoo, Kashmiri separatist leader and a former member of terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, seeking a review of its verdict awarding life imprisonment to him for killing human rights activist H N Wanchoo.

Faktoo, who is in jail since 1993, is the husband of Asiya Andrabi, also a separatist leader and chairperson of Islamist organisation Dukhtaran-e-Millat.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which treated the writ petition of Faktoo as a review plea, said the “comprehension” of the accused that the earlier judgement was “erroneous” would not enable the court to “reopen” the entire case.

The bench, also comprising Justices P C Pant and A M Khanwilkar, said the open court hearing of the review petitions is available as a matter of right “only in death sentence cases”. (AGENCIES)

India retains its position as third largest investor in UK

LONDON:  India has retained its position as the third largest investor in Britain, according to official UK government figures released today.

The US remains the biggest source of inward investment, accounting for 570 projects, and China grabs the second spot with 156 projects, the UK’s Department for International Trade data showed.

The latest investment figures come as a boost following the Brexit vote in June, as the country emerged as the most popular destination in the European Union for overseas firms.

The UK recorded a total of 2,213 inward investment projects, up 11 per cent on the previous year, with 116,000 jobs “created or safeguarded” by overseas investment last year.

“These impressive results show the UK continues to be the place to do business. We’ve broadened our reach with emerging markets across the world to cement our position as the number one destination in Europe for investment,” said UK international trade secretary Liam Fox, who is in India this week to hold talks with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

“The UK-India partnership lies at the very heart of the strategic relationship between our two nations, a relationship that has never been more important than it is today,” he said.

Britain cannot engage in formal trade talks with other nations while it remains a member of the EU but informal talks on the idea of future deals can be discussed.

Once Article 50 is invoked and the official process for Britain’s exit from the economic bloc is set in motion, the UK is reportedly keen to strike pacts with emerging markets like India and China.

While in India, Fox also met major Indian firms in the information technology sector including HCL and Tech Mahindra.

“The UK is the investment destination of choice for Indian ICT companies, and the secretary of state [Fox] discussed future investment opportunities in the UK,” his department said in a statement today.

This is the fourth visit by a British minister to India since Theresa May took over as the Prime Minister of the UK last month.

Earlier this month, UK secretary of state for business and energy Greg Clark and secretary of state for international development Priti Patel visited India.

Another Indian-origin minister Alok Sharma, who took charge as minister for Asia in the UK Foreign Office, was the first to make a tour of India last month. (AGENCIES)

Cong dubs continued use of pellet guns in Kashmir as betrayal

SRINAGAR:  Congress today said the decision to continue use of pellet guns in controlling protests in Kashmir was very upsetting and amounted to “betrayal” with the Opposition which was given to understand that these would be stopped.

“Well, this has made us very upset. At the national level, we were all one when we raised our voice against the use of pellet guns and we were told on the floor of the House that a committee has been constituted and whatever recommendations will come we will implement and we were privately given to understand that the use of pellet guns will not be there,” Congress general secretary and leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters here.

He was responding to a question on reports about the Centre deciding to continue use of pellet guns in Kashmir even as other alternatives would also be used.

Azad said there was another delegation led by former chief minister Omar Abdullah, which met President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and everybody in Delhi.

Omar and the all-party delegation led by him to Delhi also made the leadership understand that there should not be use of any pellet guns, he said.

“But, it is very sad that the demand made by all party leaders in both houses of Parliament and the demand made by the all party leaders from J-K has been totally neglected. We are totally upset with this decision of the government. It amounts to a betrayal of sorts,” he said.

Azad said sending an all-party delegation to Kashmir was not an initiative of the government but it was a demand made by the Opposition parties.

“No, I don’t think this was their initiative. They never wanted then we would not have to fight so long. We had to fight it, we had to fight for this all party delegation again and again inside the Parliament and outside the Parliament,” he said. (AGENCIES)

NEW DELHI: The Income Tax department has seized an all-time high value of cash and jewellery, while Rs 3,360 crore unpaid taxes have been surrendered this year as part of its enhanced crackdown against black money holders in the country.

In a mammoth jump of over three times in the searches, raids and seizure action in the first seven months of this year as compared to the corresponding period of 2015, the department seized over Rs 330 crore of alleged tainted cash, jewellery and other movable and immovable assets.

Last year, this figure stood at Rs 102.50 crore.

An official report prepared in this regard states that IT raids and searches this year have beaten all records of the last about five years in terms of number of such actions conducted, seizures made and subsequently the untaxed income brought to the government coffers.

The figures compiled in the report, which has been accessed, state that the IT Department carried out only 55 searches between January-July 2015, while these numbers rose to 148 in the corresponding period this year, cash seized during these operations jumped thrice to over Rs 254 crore as compared to Rs 76.72 crore last year, and the value of jewellery and precious metals seized this year stands at Rs 84.59 crore as compared to Rs 21.59 crore in 2105.

“The total value of the seizures, after IT raids were conducted between January-July this year, stands at Rs 329.93 crore as compared to Rs 102.50 crore during the same period last year. The latest figures are progressive and would go over Rs 330 crore (for Jan-July, 2016). This is a three times increase,” the report said.

It said the investigation directorate of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the policy-making body of the IT Department, has issued strict directives to step up these actions to unearth instances of domestic black money and go into “all the usual and unusual sectors” that generate untaxed wealth.

The department, across all the 16 regional investigation wings in the country, also got admitted or got surrendered over Rs 3,360 crore of money after searches were conducted, which was identified as unaccounted wealth, as compared to Rs 2,146.38 crore of such funds last year during the same period. Despite unrest in Valley, 15 PoK guests arrive, no Kashmiri cross to other side

SRINAGAR : Despite unrest in the Kashmir valley, 15 fresh guests from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) arrived here while no resident from this side crossed over to other side of Line of Control (LoC), official sources said here today.
As many as 18 returnees crossed sides at the Kaman post, the last Indian military post on this side of the LoC in Uri after completing stay with their relatives, separated in 1947 due to partition, sources said.
They said 15 residents of PoK, including six women and two children, arrived at Kaman post after crossing the Aman Setu, peace bridge on foot yesterday in the afternoon.
A Kashmiri, who had gone to other side of the LoC, also returned after completing stay in PoK.
However, due to protests, stone pelting and strike during the day, the guests and a returnee had to stay at Salamabad, Uri for security reasons till late in the night before starting journey to Srinagar, they said, adding that the Karvan-e-Aman bus, carrying the passengers crossed the Baramulla at 2330 hrs.
Sources said no Kashmiri crossed over to PoK while 17 PoK residents returned to their homes after completing stay here. They included eight women and two children.
The bus with only six passengers left Srinagar at about 0530 hrs early yesterday for security reasons to avoid any demonstrations or stone pelting on way, they said, adding that the bus has safely reached Kaman post at about 0900 hrs. Later, eleven more PoK residents boarded the bus at Kaman post.
The bus service was suspended on July 4 because of Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
However, the cross-LoC bus was suspended on July 11 and 18 for security reasons following massive protests after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants in an encounter in Anantnag.
Later, it was decided to ply bus service early in the morning from here and late in the night from Kaman post to avoid any violence.
The bus service, introduced on April 7, 2005, has helped thousands of families divided due to partition in 1947 to meet each other after India and Pakistan agreed to allow travel of state subjects from both sides on travel permits instead of international passport.
However, people are allowed to travel only after their names are cleared from intelligence agencies from both sides. (AGENCIES)

Committee flags gaps, vulnerability in Indo-Pak border fencing

NEW DELHI: Use of scientific technology and heightened vigil on riverine frontiers while guarding the Indo-Pak border are among the suggestions given by a Home Ministry-appointed committee which also flagged gaps and vulnerability in border fencing.

The committee, headed by former Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, was set up following the terror attack on Pathankot air base and it submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh today.

Official sources said the committee suggested that scientific methods like laser walls could not be installed in many infiltration-prone areas where due to treacherous terrain or marshy riverine fencing could not be installed so far.

The committee has given separate recommendations for four states which touch the international border with Pakistan as each state has separate topography and problems. (AGENCIES)

I-T dept to ‘name & shame’ chronic crorepati defaulters

NEW DELHI: As part of its ‘naming and shaming’ policy to curb tax evasion, the Income Tax Department may soon go on to publish names of even those taxpayers who have a ‘chronic’ default of Rs one crore and above.

Officials said the policy framework for putting the names of such entities in public domain has been in the making for quite some time and the proposal is now being vetted by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

An action plan in this regard was also discussed during the Tax Administrators conference held here a few months ago and once the CBDT approves the policy, the names would be published in leading dailies and could possibly also be displayed on the department’s official web portal, they said.

“The subject will be discussed by the CBDT with senior I-T brass in the next few days after which a final decision will be made. The proposal is that cases of chronic default of over Rs one crore would also be publicly named, on the lines of a similar step taken against large tax defaulters beginning last year,” a senior official said. No blanket ban on pellet guns, but to be used in rare cases

NEW DELHI: Pellet guns, which are being used by security forces for crowd control in Jammu and Kashmir, will not be completely banned but will be fired in “rarest of rare cases”, a top Government official said today.

Senior Government functionaries have arrived at this conclusion after extensive consultations with security forces and examining the ground realities in Kashmir Valley.

The option of firing pellet guns will remain but it will be used only in rarest of rare cases, the official said.

The Government is facing severe criticism for using the pellet guns for crowd control in Kashmir Valley as the weapon has caused large-scale injuries in the 51-day unrest following killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani on July 8.

During his two-day visit to Kashmir on August 24-25, Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said an alternative to pellet guns will be given to security forces in the coming days. (AGENCIES)
