28 PSA detenues among 2,356 lodged in different jails

SRINAGAR : Twenty eight people, detained under Public Safety Act (PSA), were among 2,356 lodged in different jails in various jails in Jammu and Kashmir.
This information was given by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who also holds the Home portfolio in reply to a question by Mohammad Akbar Lone in the Legislative Assembly today.
She said, ”there is no official record in the Home Department to suggest that the government has made any announcement during the year 2015 or 2016 that it will release all the prisoners detained under different Acts.”
The reply said as one June 23, 2016 there are 350 convicts, 1,889 undertrials and 117 detenues in various jails in the State.
She said during the year 2015, 94 persons were detained under the provisions of PSA 1978 and Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1988 on various grounds. Out of these 66 persons have been released and 28 persons are still under detention.
However, keeping in view the security of these detenues and their families, it would not be feasible to disclose their names. (AGENCIES)
