Border shelling witness increase, SF killings dips in J&K

SRINAGAR: Shelling and firing from across the border has recorded increase, so has the civilians security force killing last year, against previous year, but the militant violence, death of civilians and security forces has witnessed drop in the Jammu and Kashmir.

There were 222 shelling and firing incidents from across the border during 2015 that left 16 civilians dead and 71 injured, besides nine security personnel lost their lives and 14 were wounded, Chief Minster Mehbooba Mufti, who also holds Home portfolio said in the Legislative Assembly in reply to a question by Mubarak Gul.

However, she said, during the year 2014 there were 190 incidents in which 14 civilians and four security personnel were killed and 101 civilian and 16 security men were wounded.

She said due to these firing incidents, 183 houses have suffered damge. During the last two years, an amount of Rs 37.25 lakh has been paid as ex-gratia to Next of Kin (NOK) of the persons killed in border firing or those injured in Jammu division and Rs one lakh paid to NOK in Kashmir valley.

An amount of Rs 53,100 has also been paid on account of damage to property in Kashmir valley on account of border firing, the reply said. (AGENCIES)
