SRINAGAR: A militant was killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, where a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander was killed earlier in the day.
Official sources here tonight said following specific information about presence of militants in the woods near Warnow village in Kupwara, a joint search operation was launched by Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons indiscriminately. The security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding in the initiate exchange of fire a militant was killed.
The operation was still going on when the reports last came in, they said, adding additional security forces have been rushed to further cordon off the area to foil any attempts by militants to escape. (AGENCIES)
